Why are U.S. readers and publishers so resistant to literature in translation? Some chalk it up to cultural imperialism (UNESCO's Index Translationum, a source of translation information and statistics, quotes "several writers" who claim there is "a certain arrogance on the part of British and American publishing houses... [which] consider anything published in another language to be automatically inferior").
