The author blames Indiana Jones. As a youngster in Dumfries, he saw himself as an archaeologist but somehow it never panned out. He left school at 16 to become an apprentice welder but he only picked up a welding rod once. He has only worked for two companies since -- the creamery and Arla. One of the high points of his career at Arla was getting the phone call that said he had got the process manager's job. The other one was getting the letter from Cranfield saying they were through to the last 14 of the Best Factory Awards. All his qualifications were done on the job and it's been a long haul. They have a fantastic programme in Arla aimed at producing future world-class dairy technologists.
