Zusammenfassung: | Real and lasting solutions to the problem of US competitiveness will be found in the hard work that propels change at the level of the individual firm or enterprise. Over the past 5 years, the outlook for many US firms has improved as a result of efforts to reduce costs, add value to products, modernize production, and increase productivity. Numerous techniques have been developed to help companies assess their competitiveness. Such assessments allow firms to target areas for improvement and to discover the nature and level of change required. The US does seem to be regrouping, but the country will need 5 more years to continue the adjustment process, 5-10 years to complete the introduction of advanced technology, and 5 additional years to learn strategic use of that technology. Executives cannot rely on governmental remedies or quick fixes. Continued innovation in marketing, product development, and manufacturing is needed. |
