As the most densely populated province it accommodates some 9.6 million people (20.2% of the total population). The northern part of Gauteng, where 2.5 million people reside, falls within the Crocodile (West) Marico Water Management Area and drains towards the Upper Crocodile (Hartbeespoort Dam) and the Apies Pienaar River (where another 2.5 million people reside).
