Surveys the current state of research into French music publishing, which highlights the richness of the field and suggests further avenues for exploration. States that more minor figures await investigation, as does music printing from other centers such as Geneva and Strasbourg. Notes also that less work has been done on the dissemination of 16th-century French music editions, even though survival of French editions in locations far outside their place of origin suggests that such materials were widely disseminated. Comments on other areas that need more serious examination.
