Gaspar Castaño de Sosa: the first founder of Monterrey

ABSTRACT IN SPANISH: Este trabajo presenta una breve biografía de uno de los más importantes personajes en la historia del Nuevo Reino de León: Gaspar Castaño de Sosa, hombre de origen portugués cuyas acciones fueron de cierta consecuencia. La biografía está basada en documentos del Siglo XVI, tanto españoles como portugueses. Análisis de estos últimos nos han permitido identificar, con alta probabilidad, los nombres de sus padres y de otros miembros de su familia. En lo que se refiere a sus servicios a la Corona española, otros documentos muestran que Gaspar Castaño fue el primer fundador de lo que ahora se llama Monterrey. El artículo también examina la entrada que él hizo al Nuevo México. Esta parte del trabajo continúa nuestro examen de esa incursión dando énfasis a lo sucedido después que Castaño fue tomado preso. Finalmente, el trabajo incluye trascripciones de varios documentos relacionados a esa jornada. // ABSTRACT IN ENGLISH: This work presents a brief biography of one of the most important persons in the history of Nuevo Reino de León: Gaspar Castaño de Sosa, a man of Portuguese origin whose actions where of some consequence. The biography is based on Sixteenth Century Spanish and Portuguese documents. Analysis of the latter has enabled us to identify, with high probability, the names of his parents and of other members of his family. With respect to his services to the Spanish crown, other documents show that the was the first founder of what is now known as Monterrey. The article also examines the incursion that he made into Nuevo México. This part of the work continues our examination of that incursion, giving emphasis to the events that took place after Castaño was taken prisoner. Finally, the article includes several transcriptions of original documents related to that journey.
