Rapid conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfate in a fog bank

Sulfur emissions, the elemental content of particles and the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfate were studied in the plume from and oil-fired plant on the Pacific coast. Zusammenfassung:Sulfur emissions, the elemental content of particles and the conversion of sulfur dioxide to sulfate were studied in the plume from and oil-fired plant on the Pacific coast. The conversion averaged 30% in fog. In the fog bank, the process probably involved oxidation by coemitted oxidants in the plume. These processes may be what cause acidic fogs along the California coast and may be significant to the understanding of acid rain. ( 2 graphs, 1 MAP, 39 references, 2 tables, )
