Discussion Essay: Semiotic Properties of Racializing Discourses

Urciuoli reflects on the papers presented in this issue of the Journal of Linguistic Anthropology on racializing discourses. Urciuoli synthesizes points made by these essays into a larger discussion of social marking generally, discussing how semiotic elements "cumulatively operate to bridge the gap, so to speak, between the macro-level social conditions that generate the limits experienced as race, gender, and other forms of social marking, and the micro-level experience of them as social fact.".
