Nature and properties of some chlorinated, lipophilic, organic compounds in spent liquors from pulp bleaching. 1. Liquors from conventional bleaching of softwood kraft pulp

Chlorinated diones and enol lactones were identified by gas chromatography. Some of the compounds were weakly mutagenic and had a limited potential for bioaccumulation. However, they were chemically unstable and decomposed under conditions found in receiving waters (pH 7 and ambient temperature).
