Zusammenfassung: | Samuel Howitt is best remembered for an abundance of pictures featuring gentlemen taking part in their beloved pursuits : shooting, fishing, coursing, and hunting. His subjects were almost invariably presented in a mirthless vein, but in his 40s, Howitt contributed to and published a group of comical satires that came from a shadowy joker known as "Giles Grinagain." The influences of his brother-in-law, Thomas Rowlandson, and his cousin, Captain Thomas Williamson, are considered, and motivations for the comic works are explored. |
