The Influence of Light Intensity on Growth of Larval Haddock

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of light intensity on growth and survival of larval haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus. Larvae were exposed to a treatment of white incandescent light at an intensity of either 110 lx (3.15 μmol · s−1 · m−2), or 5 lx (0.20 μmol · s−1 · m−2). S...

Zusammenfassung:The objective of this study was to determine the influence of light intensity on growth and survival of larval haddock Melanogrammus aeglefinus. Larvae were exposed to a treatment of white incandescent light at an intensity of either 110 lx (3.15 μmol · s−1 · m−2), or 5 lx (0.20 μmol · s−1 · m−2). Survival was greater under 110 lx (3.8 ± 1.2%) than under 5 lx (0.3 ± 0.2%). Regressions of larval size over time showed faster growth in body area of larvae exposed to 110 lx. Results of this experiment confirm the importance of light intensity in the aquaculture mesocosm.
