Zusammenfassung: | Pain is the most common reason people seek medical advice. It is estimated that more than 50 million Americans suffer from chronic pain, e.g., nonmalignant, benign, or non-cancer-related pain, caused by disease, treatment side effects, or injury. The number of patients with chronic pain exceeds those with diabetes, heart disease, and cancer combined. The World Health Organization has stated that pain is the number one health problem in America. Here, Payne et al consider how to curtail the abuse of prescription pain medications without making it more difficult for people struggling with chronic pain to receive the medications they need and examine the effectiveness of pain agreements/contracts in addressing this problem. |
