Zusammenfassung:	Malaria is an infectious disease caused by parasites of the genus Plasmodium. This intraerythrocytic protozoan produces hemozoin (HZ), an insoluble crystalline metabolite resulting from the heme detoxification mechanism. This review will focus on HZ biosynthesis and synthetic preparation, but in particular on its effect on host’s innate inflammatory responses.
