Zusammenfassung:Explores Turkish neo-nationalism (ulusalcIlIk). Attention is given to its historical roots, relations with traditional Turkish nationalism, & domestic & foreign policy implications. The Ergenekon affair is used to demonstrate the potency of the neo-nationalist movement, the relevance of ulusalcIlIk to domestic politics, & its potential threat to Turkish democracy. It is contended that ulusalcIlIk is distinct from other kinds of nationalism given its simultaneous claims of loyalty to the Kemalist orthodoxy & opposition to Turkish westernization. Light is also shed on an emerging fragmentation in the Turkish military & judiciary with respect to the tutelary role of the Turkish bureaucracy. D. Edelman
