Zusammenfassung: | The rich tradition of Croatian phytonymic research is illustrated with several dictionaries & inventories compiled in the 19th century, including works by Bogoslav Sulek (1879), P. I. Schlosser & L. Vukotinovic (1869), & A. Haracic (1891). However, this legacy did not lead to the compilation of a comprehensive etymological lexicon of Croatian phytonyms, Petar Skok's Etimologijski rjecnik hrvatskoga ili srpskoga jezika ([Etymological Dictionary of Croatian or Serbian Language] 1971-1974) only partially meeting this need. Diachronic & synchronic analyses of phytonyms & horizontal & vertical approaches to their description are characterized & illustrated with eastern Adriatic material in which ancient Roman strata, recent Italian & Venetian borrowings, & adaptations of internationalisms are distinguished.
