Zusammenfassung: | The pre-Slavic history of the Russian Northwest is investigated in an onomastic analysis of Old Baltic traces in local toponymy. Archeological finds are interpreted from a linguistic perspective, & relicts of Baltic elements in hydronyms & oronyms. The phenomenon of metonymic calquing of Baltic names by Slavic peoples settling in the region is documented. The areal extent & northeastern boundary of Slavic-Baltic contacts are considered drawing on archeological data. The mixing of Baltic & Finno-Ugric elements in local toponymy is noted. References. Z.
