Zusammenfassung: | After a brief presentation of Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) as a distinguished German romantic poet and playwright, his novella Das Erdbeben in Chili ([The Earthquake in Chile] Stuttgart: Reclam, 1984) is used to construct a modular instruction model for German as a first or second language. The model was tested as didactically effective with undergraduates at the Georgia State U & native German speakers in grades ten to twelve of the International School of Stuttgart. The activities conducted within the successive modules are described, pointing out that the model is based on David E. Wellbery (1985) literary theory, Martina E. Eidecker's (1994 & 1999) proposals for using literary texts in language class, discourse analysis, & deconstructivism. The analysis & interpretation of the text's plot, discursive topoi, & architecture & Kleist's narrative style are placed in the context of the period, ie, German Romanticism, & selected themes are used for creative writing tasks. Individual & group work formats are introduced when the novella's content & formal aspects (style, language, genre, literary tradition) are discussed in the classroom. Advanced organizers & brainstorming facilitate the text analysis proper. References. Z. Dubiel |
