Zusammenfassung: | Occasions, conditions, & circumstances in Croatian in which a foreign term is used before the native term (ie, as a de facto borrowing) are investigated. This phenomenon is noted most frequently in terminological areas new to Croatian, such as that of the computer (eg, English mouse is more widely used than the Croatian mis), economics (East Asian 'tiger' economies), sports (tie-break over razigravanje), & other technology (card scanner over pretrazivac kartica). The question of whether calques or neologisms can supplant borrowings is addressed, as are orthographic questions of rendering the borrowing into Croatian (eg, softver vs software). Also compared are German adoptions of English technological vocabulary. Adapted from the source document |
