Zusammenfassung: | There are several nesonyms (island names) in Constantine Porphyrogenitus's 10th-century treaty De administrando imperio (On Governing an Imperium), & all can be matched with current designations in use on the Croatian Adriatic coast. However, the form Katautrebeno remains controversial, as linguists disagree whether it refers to one or two islands & what the components Katau- & -trebeno mean. The literature addressing this & related issues is surveyed, considering the viability of the various interpretations proposed & assessing how well they conform to the onomastic system outlined for the Zadar islands cluster in Porphyrogenitus's treaty & the extralinguistic realities on the Adriatic coast today. It is concluded that although several interpretations are possible for -trebeno, the question as to the meaning of the second element of Katautrebeno, & the larger one (whether it refers to one or two islands), must remain unanswered. However, Katau- can be identified with certainty as the modern nesonym Katina, a name of an island in the Kornati archipelago. 30 References. Z. Dubiel |
