A distinction is made between stress at the utterance level and that at the level of a lexical item. The argument, presented in terms of a Dependency framework, is that Old English word-stress is morphologically sensitive at the lexical level, but subject to post-lexical phonological conditions under which structures may be built upon but not changed.
