Analytical and Synthetical Decisions in German-Dutch Contrasts

According to I. Kant's Critique of Pure Reason (1781), propositions that express human knowledge can be divided along two distinctions: there are a priori & a posteriori propositions, & (2) there is the distinction between propositions that are analytic (erlauternd), ie, those in which the predicate is included in the subject, & those that are synthetic (erweiternd), ie, those in which the predicate is not included in the subject. It is shown that this latter distinction gives rise to at least two grammatical contrasts between the German & Dutch languages, namely on the grammatical field of apposition & that of subjects in the singular form expressing groups of persons (Kollektivsingular). 5 References.
