Zusammenfassung:A review of Paula R. Backscheider's edition of Daniel Defoe's Journal of the Plague Year (New York: W. W. Norton & Co, 1992 [see listing in IRPL, this issue]), a work focusing on the devastation caused by the bubonic plague in 1722 London. Lengthy quotes from the work are utilized to demonstrate various aspects found to be lacking in continuity or interest. The "repetition of a nameless class of repetition indicators divided into past, present, & future subclasses" is described as the most annoying of the book's shortcomings. The central themes of the book are described as are the main characters, & important occurrences. Recommendations for future interpretation of this work are given. H. L. Stidger
