Zusammenfassung: | A treatise on modern French generative morphology is presented including a discussion of conjugation, & an analysis of feminine & plural formation in Ns & adjs. The insistence on morphology is relatively new in generative grammar. Generative morphology differs from traditional morphology in that: (1) instead of simply listing paradigms, it seeks to explain the interior relationship between root & endings, & (2) it is treated like phonology & syntax, & studied in the framework of an integral model. A distinction is made between phonic & written aspects of Fr, & Fr conjugation is presented in a more unitary fashion than has previously been done. A series of phonological & morphological rules appears for the first time in this book. Certain intrinsic contradictions are pointed out relating to spelling & suppositions in S. A. Shane's French Phonology and Morphology (Cambridge, MA, 1968), whose phonological conception is very close to F. Kiefer's. A. Rubins |
