Zusammenfassung: | A discussion of computer aided research in Chinese linguistics in the U.S. The primary focus is on research activities in two major areas at the University of California at Berkeley: Chinese phonology and Chinese-English contrastive grammatical studies. The former is concerned with the study of general linguistic processes of sound change and utilizes a large pool of computerized data on modern and ancient Chinese dialects. Specific computer applications in the area of phonological rule testing, data search, and frequency counts are reported. The second major area deals with the complex structures of grammar and semantics, and application thereof to Chinese-English translation. This includes a specific model for the automatic analysis of Chinese language data. The application of the computer to automatic parsing and interlingual processes is described in detail, as are problems of input/output and quantitative studies of language. HA |
