Zusammenfassung: | A generalized phrase structure grammar (GPSG) syntax is given for constructions containing self-forms that are used nonreflexively (intensifiers), eg, John himself mowed the lawn. The analysis is motivated in detail: (1) the categorial status & the level of attachment of intensifiers are discussed; (2) the syntax for intensifiers is shown to interact properly with other rules already in the grammar; & (3) antecedent-intensifier agreement is seen to follow completely from GPSG restrictions on feature instantiation, the head feature convention, & the control agreement principle. Three kinds of intensifiers are distinguished: head-bound intensifiers (as in the previous example), after-aux or AA intensifiers (eg, I may myself go for a swim), & end-intensifiers or E-intensifiers (eg, Jack kissed Jill himself). The distinction drawn between intensifier self-forms & reflexive self-forms is supported by the fact that in some langs (eg, Dutch & French), the two are realized by different forms. 16 References.
