Exclusive and Restrictive Constructions in Italian

Italian constructions with non ... que & non ... se non are analyzed; the devices are found to function as delimitators of the semantics of the phrase in which they are used. Paraphrases of such constructions are examined & possible equivalents of an equal restrictive strength are considered. It is noted that these restrictive devices are often used to express the speaker's subjective viewpoint on the utterance's content. The syntactic environment in which the restrictives occur are studied & their pragmatic value is discussed. The expression non fare que 'to do nothing but' is examined. Z. Dubiel
