Zusammenfassung: | The question of how best to describe pragmatic knowledge in linguistic communication is addressed & three possible model types are distinguished: rules, procedures, & a rules & procedures combination. The rule & procedure approach is argued to be the most effective. A distinction between declarative & procedural pragmatic knowledge is described & components of pragmatically relevant declarative knowledge are discussed. A model of how declarative & procedural knowledge are used in conversation is illustrated with a discussion of apologies. Emphasis is on conversations between native speakers, but implications for second-lang teaching are considered. 31 References. B. Annesser Murray |
