Zusammenfassung: | An abstract of previous works (Clements, G., "Tone as Speech Melody: A New Theory of Terracing" in Papers from the Sixth Regional Meeting of the North Eastern Linguistic Society, Montreal: Working Papers in Linguistics, 1976, 6, May; & Ford, D., The Tones of Nouns in Kikuyu, Studies in African Linguistics, 1975, 6, 1, 49-64). The Kikuyu tonal processes involving downstep (DS) are discussed based on data from twenty-three Kikuyu idiolects. A working definition for the DS is proposed. DS is an entity ordered among tonemes in phonological representations. Rules for DS are formulated. Z. Dubiel |
