Multimodal Augmentative and Alternative Communication: Case Study

The development of a multimodal augmentative & alternative communication (AAC) system by a hearing-impaired, physically disabled adult, aged 38, is reported. The gradual integration of various communication modes is chronicled, beginning with the S's use of typing & manual signs, through the addition of communication boards, & finally, a voice output communication aid. The S's multimodal use both across & within communicative situations is also described, & implications for future AAC development are explored. 4 Tables, 1 Figure, 37 References.
