Zusammenfassung: | The article title implies a question about the term 'Global Youth?' We are not convinced that as far as youth culture is concerned the global eclipses the local in the end. For our purposes, we use globalization to refer to those aspects of cultural & economic globalization emanating from the cultural 'cores' that threaten to sweep away distinctive local practices & identity frames in favor of a homogenized set of consumption practices & ways to think about identity. However, this article challenges the colonialist discourse of cultural globalization. Our purpose here is not only to trace some subaltern 'youth landscapes,' but also to relate them to some subaltern 'youth histories' -- & 'youth stories' -- previously invisible in predominantly western cultural studies & theorizing about youth, especially those that over-emphasize globalization. Below, the connection between 'hybridity,' 'plural worlds' & 'globalization,' reminds us that, in the information age, generational identities are already de-localized, even while they remain in another sense, local. The article is an attempt to connect global youth to global cultures, consumerism, resistance, transnationalism & digitalization of the global age. Adapted from the source document. |
