Prices and concentration on the Hungarian retail market for motor fuels

In examining the relations of prices and concentration on the Hungarian retail market for motor fuels, the study shows how local differences in concentration levels explain only a small proportion of the sizeable contemporaneous price differences between different localities. For these price differences can be explained well as retail price reactions to wholesale price changes. There is a significant negative relation between retail price (or price margin) and the concentration on local markets (measured in competing filling sta tions), but in a practical sense a loose relation can be shown. Nor does the symmetric price transmission at local level show deviations, and its degree is not influenced by the local concentration. //ABSTRACT IN HUNGARIAN: A tanulmány az árak és a koncentráció közötti összefüggéseket vizsgálja a magyar kiskereskedelmi üzemanyagpiacon. Bemutatja, hogy a koncentrációs szintek lokális különbségei csak kis részben magyarázzák az egyes földrajzi területek közötti adott idopontbeli jelentos árkülönbséget. Az egyes idopontok közötti árkülönbségek ugyanakkor igen jól magyarázhatók a kiskereskedelmi árak nagykereskedelmi árváltozásokra adott reakciójával. A kiskereskedelmi ár (árrés) és a lokális piacokon - a versenyzo kutak számával - mért koncentráció között szignifikánsan negatív, ugyanakkor gyakorlati értelemben gyenge kapcsolat mutatható ki. A szimmetrikus ártranszmisszió lokális szinten sem mutat eltéréseket, mértékét nem befolyásolja a lokális koncentráció. Reprinted by permission of Akadémiai Kiadó
