Absence of 16α-hydroxylating activity in the human midterm placenta

Testosterone-4- 14C was incubated with homogenates of three midterm placentas. Although large quantities of 14C-labeled estrone and 17β-estradiol were isolated, no 14C-labeled estriol was detected. These findings agree with the results of in situ placental perfusions previously reported from this la...

Zusammenfassung:Testosterone-4- 14C was incubated with homogenates of three midterm placentas. Although large quantities of 14C-labeled estrone and 17β-estradiol were isolated, no 14C-labeled estriol was detected. These findings agree with the results of in situ placental perfusions previously reported from this laboratory. It is concluded that the human placenta at midpregnancy does not possess a 16α-hydroxylating enzyme system for C-19 and C-18 steroids.
