Zusammenfassung:L. R. SQUIRE AND P. H. LISS (SEE 42:9) RAISE 4 CRITICISMS OF THE STIMULUS-CONTROL INTERPRETATION OF THE SPREADING DEPRESSION PHENOMENON. 3 OF THE POINTS THAT THEY CHALLENGE ARE DEFENDED ON THE BASIS OF DATA AND STATEMENTS PRESENTED BY SCHNEIDER. THE 4TH CRITICISM, THAT THE STIMULUS-CONTROL THEORY FAILS TO ACCOUNT FOR THE AMNESIC EFFECTS OF POSTTRANSFER DEPRESSION, WHEN ANALYZED ON BOTH EMPIRICAL AND LOGICAL GROUNDS, IS NOT JUSTIFIED. HOWEVER, SOME QUESTIONS REMAIN AND SUGGESTIONS ARE OFFERED FOR FUTURE RESEARCH THAT WOULD FURTHER RESOLVE THE COMPLEXITIES OF THIS LATTER ISSUE.
