Zusammenfassung: | 3 INTERRELATED CROSS CULTURAL STUDIES, USING AMERICAN AND GREEK SS, CONCERNED THE (1) ROLE PERCEPTIONS, (2) BEHAVIORAL INTENTIONS, AND (3) PERCEPTIONS OF SOCIAL BEHAVIOR IN THE SS. IN 1, 100 ROLES WERE JUDGED ON A SAMPLE OF 120 BEHAVIOR DESCRIPTIVE SCALES. BEHAVIORS WERE OBTAINED FROM POOLS OF SEVERAL THOUSAND BEHAVIORS ELICITED INDEPENDENTLY IN EACH CULTURE. SS JUDGED THE APPROPRIATENESS OF EACH BEHAVIOR FOR EACH ROLE. FACTOR ANALYSES EXTRACTED 4 CULTURE-COMMON FACTORS: AFFECT, INTIMACY, DOMINANCE, HOSTILITY. IN 2, 96 STIMULUS PERSONS WERE JUDGED ON THE SAME BEHAVIOR DESCRIPTIVE SCALES. SS INDICATED THEIR BEHAVIORAL INTENTIONS TOWARDS THEM. FACTOR ANALYSES RESULTED IN CULTURE-COMMON FACTORS SIMILAR TO THOSE OBTAINED IN 1. IN 3, SAMPLES OF DESCRIPTIONS OF BEHAVIORS, HAVING HIGH LOADINGS IN 1 AND 2, WERE JUDGED BY SS ACCORDING TO THE THURSTONE EQUAL APPEARING INTERVAL TECHNIQUE, ON THE 4 CULTURE-COMMON CONTINUA. CORRELATIONS AMONG THE SCALE VALUES SUGGEST THAT THE INTIMACY AND AFFECT DIMENSIONS ARE MOST BASIC FOR THE PERCEPTION OF SOCIAL BEHAVIORS. A THEORY OF SOCIAL BEHAVIOR WHICH UTILIZES THESE 2 DIMENSIONS IS PRESENTED. THE DISCUSSION FOCUSES ON THE IMPLICATIONS OF THESE RESULTS FOR STUDIES OF CULTURAL INTERACTION. (41 REF.) |
