67Gallium citrate scannings for the diagnosis of experimental deep vein thrombosis

Injection of the canine hind leg deep venous system with sodium morrhuate produces a local phlebitis with an associated clot. The soft tissues distal to this obstruction become markedly edematous. Intravenously injected 67Ga-citrate labeled the inflamed vein wall and the clot, rendering this area radioactive and allowing for external scanning. This model of acute deep vein thrombosis has certain similarities to clinical thrombophlebitis. Further studies may be indicated to clarify if 67Ga-citrate is a suitable agent for the diagnosis of clinical acute deep vein thrombosis.
