Beyond racial identity politics: towards a liberation theory for multicultural democracy

A critique of a multicultural society must bear in mind the changing ethnic composition of the United States, where a people of colour will account for third of the inhabitants by the end of the 1990s. Old classification systems and animosities must be overcome, and new values and institutions created, a process which means reshaping ideas of racial identity. This will help build a framework for a multicultural democracy in the United States in the next century.
