The Context and Significance of America's First Railroad, on Boston's Beacon Hill

The context and significance of the US' first railroad, the Beacon Hill Railroad in Boston, are discussed. It is argued that, at least through the beginning of the 1840s, British railroad technology and operations created the forms of US railroads and of US innovation in railroading.
