Zusammenfassung:Examines some of the diverse ways in which gender codes and hierarchies were embodied through the senses in pre-modernity. Traditional gender oppositions within the domains of the various senses are considered, along with those between senses, such as the classic gender dualism of sight and touch, or the symbolic opposition between `masculine' sight and `feminine' smell. Uncovers the range of such gender-coding of the senses and brings out some of its social consequences.
