Zusammenfassung:This paper draws attention to the role and potential of rural producers and their communities and organizations in sustainable development in the Arid and Semi-Arid Lands (ASAL) of Sub-Saharan Africa. It is shown that there is a store of local knowledge which people have developed over generations and that such local systems have sophisticated technical, social and organizational components which enable people to deal with survival and at the same time make rational resource management decisions. In the light of this, it is contended that there are prospects for a community-based management of natural resources in the drylands of Africa.
