Post-natal development of the normal and cardiomyopathic Syrian hamster heart: A quantitative electron microscopic study

Quantitative ultrastructural analysis has been performed on 1-, 16- and 30-day-old normal (RB) and myopathic (14.6) Syrian hamster hearts. Normal developmental patterns for mitochondrial, myofibrillar, nuclear and sarcoplasmic reticular volume fractions have been determined and compared with structu...

Zusammenfassung:Quantitative ultrastructural analysis has been performed on 1-, 16- and 30-day-old normal (RB) and myopathic (14.6) Syrian hamster hearts. Normal developmental patterns for mitochondrial, myofibrillar, nuclear and sarcoplasmic reticular volume fractions have been determined and compared with structural development observed in the left ventricle of 14.6 hamsters. Myofibrillar development appears to be altered in the myopathic heart. Developmental changes in the sarcolemma and T-tubule network have been examined. The development of the calcium-handling membranes, the sarcoplasmic reticulum and mitochondria, has been studied in both strains and divergent patterns were noted. This study provides the first quantitative description of ultrastructural alterations in the early post-natal development of the cardiomyopathic Syrian hamster heart.
