. We report here a sulphonium analogue of phosphatidyl choline which completely replaces lecithin in the non-photo-synthetic diatom,
Nitzschia alba

. The new phospholipid is a phosphatidyl S,S-dimethyl mercaptoethanol (phosphatidyl sulphocholine) with the following structure: |
