Isolation and characterization of a urinary mucoprotein from ovine urine

Physical examination of a threadlike ovine urinary mucoprotein revealed a close similarity to Tamm and Horsfall's mucoprotein of human urine. The long and slender filaments observed by electron microscopy have widths of 150 A., lengths between 2500 and 40,000 A., and repeated beading at 200 A. The ovine mucoprotein behaved as a single component in the ultracentrifuge with a sedimentation coefficient of 30 S as found by extrapolation to zero mucoprotein concentration. At pH 7.5–7.8 the electrophoretic mobility of the mucoprotein was approximately −11.6 × 10 −5 cm. 2 sec. −1 v. −1.
