Properties of crystalline hexokinase from yeast. IV. Multiple forms of the enzyme

Crystalline yeast hexokinase, prepared from commercial baker's yeast and recrystallized to constant specific activity, was separated into six molecular forms of equal specific activity by column chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. No protein without hexokinase activity was found. In preliminary studies, hexokinase was separated into at least two components by starch-gel electrophoresis. A technique involving the detection of hydrogen ions released in the hexokinase reaction was used to locate enzymatic activity in the starch gel.
