Zusammenfassung:Clinical improvement in rheumatoid arthritis has been observed in certain situations associated with hyperventilation. A consistent pharmacological effect of massive aspirin therapy is hyperventilation. In this preliminary study, the authors tested the hypothesis that the symptomatic improvement with aspirin therapy in rheumatoid arthritis is related to the ventilatory effects of the drug. Hyperventilation induced by using a Drinker respirator simulated some of the clinical effects of massive aspirin therapy. Improvement was correlated better with alveolar pCO2 levels than with aspirin dosage or serum salicylate levels. Significant but unexplained improvement in sedimentation rates occurred after respirator hyperventilation.
