Zusammenfassung: | English Publishes two statuettes representing Gabriel and the Virgin, respectively, here attributed to Giovanni di Balduccio, and dated to 1333-1334 (private collection). Argues that this Annunciation group came from the chapel of the Castello di Galliera in Bologna, demolished in the Spring of 1334. Giovanni also did a marble polyptych for this chapel, which was afterwards transferred to S. Domenico in the city, and later dispersed. According to written sources, Giotto executed frescoes in the Castello; moreover, his presence in Bologna is indicated by the polyptych now in the Pinacoteca nazionale. Reconsiders in this context Giotto's preceding sojourn in Naples, arguing that it can be placed between December 1328 and April 26, 1332. Giotto's subsequent sojourn in Bologna must have extended to the first months of 1334, as he was nominated "capomaestro" of S. Reparata in Florence in April 1334. |
