Zusammenfassung:The availability of human placentae heavily infected with schizont stages of Plasmodium falciparum for the preparation of malarial placenta antigen (MPA) was investigated in Ibadan, Western State of Nigeria. Such placentae were encountered among young primigravid women more frequently than in other classes of indigenous pregnant women. The malarial antigen obtained was suitable for mass population screening for the presence of circulating malarial antibodies in the sera of children and adults by the agar-gel diffusion technique under field conditions. The stability of the antigen on storage and its possible use in the assay of protective malarial antibodies are discussed.
