Zusammenfassung: | These preliminary data indicate that the intrauterine application of Lugol's solution is effective in preventing pregnancy in rats. In the human, application of Lugol's solution on Day 17 resulted in no contraceptive effect, but when carried out on Day 20–Day 24, the prevention of pregnancy was excellent. Irregular and/or abnormal bleeding was not reported from observation in the human volunteers. A long-term observation and evaluation of the current study is warranted to determine side effects, such as endometrial changes and irregular bleeding. Contraindication to this procedure would be hypersensitivity to iodine, or a person who is scheduled for thyroid function test. This procedure might be useful in case of rape because of its effect on the endometrium and direct spermicidal effect of Lugol's solution if applied soon thereafter. |
