Zusammenfassung:	Phase contrast microscopic examination of the recently delivered placenta offers a readily available method of identifying abnormalities of the chorionic villi. This type of examination on 995 placentas from both normal patients and those with a variety of clinical abnormalities showed a statistically significant increase in the incidence of syncytial, stromal, and combined abnormalities in patients with these clinical problems. The pathogenesis of these abnormalities remains to be defined.
