Glucocorticoids and Gastric Secretion: The Role of Cyclic Adenosine-3′, 5′-Monophosphate

Zusammenfassung:The role of adenosine-3′,5′-monophosphate (cyclic AMP) in glucocorticoid action on gastric acid secretion was studied in rats. In adrenalectomized animals, the gastric acid output, as well as the cyclic AMP content of gastric mucosa, were reduced about 60% as compared with control animals. Both the parameters were restored almost to normal by replacement therapy with dexamethasone. In intact animals, however, this glucocorticoid did not exert any statistically verifiable effect on gastric acid secretion or on cyclic AMP content of gastric mucosa either. From these results, glucocorticoids may play their permissive role in gastric acid secretion via a permissive action on net cyclic AMP production.
