Derivation, characteristics and large scale culture of a cell line from Arachis Hypogaea, L. cotyledons

A homogeneous cell line was derived from heterogeneous cultures of Arachis hypogaea, L. cotyledons. This undifferentiated cell line showed high growth potential, cellular homogeneity and genetic stability during growth. For simple routine propagation of plant cells, a large scale suspension culture apparatus was developed. This system drastically reduced the chances of contamination during sampling of the tissue and transferring of the fresh medium, which are the two major contamination hazards in animal and plant cell cultures. A growth rate of 3.2 ± 1.1 g fresh weight of tissue per day per liter suspension was obtained.
